Gender Scan vs NIPT Gender Testing- Which Is Right for You?

One of the most exciting milestones in pregnancy is finding out whether you’re expecting a boy or a girl. At Love at First Scan, we offer two ways to find out: a gender ultrasound scan, and gender determination through NIPT (Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing). Here’s how they compare, so you can decide what’s right for you.

Gender Scan

Our gender scans are available from 14 weeks. A qualified sonographer will use ultrasound to assess the baby’s anatomy and determine sex. It’s a lovely, visual experience- many parents love seeing their baby moving on screen at the same time as finding out if they’re having a boy or a girl.

Accuracy from a skilled sonographer at the right gestational age is generally very high, though ultrasound gender determination can occasionally be affected by baby’s position.

NIPT Gender Testing

NIPT is a blood test, available from 10 weeks of pregnancy- earlier than a gender ultrasound. As well as offering optional fetal sex determination, NIPT screens for the most common chromosomal conditions, including Down’s, Edwards’, and Patau’s syndrome.

Because it’s based on a blood sample rather than ultrasound, NIPT can offer earlier and highly accurate sex determination, alongside valuable screening information.

Which should you choose?

Some parents choose a gender scan for the experience and bonding moment of seeing their baby on screen. Others prefer NIPT for earlier results, combined screening information, or as a follow-up to an early scan. You can also combine both- many of our clients book an early scan first, followed by a gender scan or NIPT later in pregnancy.

If you’re unsure which is right for you, our team is happy to talk through the options when you call to book.
