What to Expect at Your First Pregnancy Scan in Liverpool

If you’re booking your first early pregnancy scan, it’s completely normal to feel a mix of excitement and nerves. Many of the families who visit us in West Derby are coming for their very first glimpse of their baby, often before their NHS dating scan, and want to know exactly what to expect.

When can I have an early pregnancy scan?

Our early pregnancy scans are available from 6 weeks. At this stage, we’re usually able to confirm the pregnancy location, detect a heartbeat, and check how many babies you’re expecting.

What happens during the appointment?

You’ll be welcomed into our calm, private scan room by one of our fully qualified, HCPC registered sonographers. Depending on how many weeks pregnant you are, your scan will either be abdominal or transvaginal — your sonographer will talk you through this beforehand so there are no surprises.

The scan itself usually takes around 15-20 minutes. Your sonographer will talk you through what they’re seeing as they go, and you’ll have the chance to ask any questions.

Will I get to see my baby and take images home?

Yes — all of our scans include two printed images of your choice, so you can take that first glimpse home with you.

Do I need a referral from my GP or midwife?

No referral is needed. You can book directly with us at any point during your pregnancy from 6 weeks.

What if there’s a problem with the scan?

We understand how anxiety-inducing early pregnancy can be. If anything is unclear or needs a follow-up, your sonographer will talk you through next steps clearly and compassionately, and signpost you to NHS services where appropriate.

If you’re ready to book your early pregnancy scan, you can do so online or by calling us on 07546016918.
